"The Pogues" were originally named Pogue Mahone — an Irish phrase (póg mo thóin) meaning “kiss my arse.” The album was notable for having songwriting contributions from several band members beyond Shane MacGowan and was dedicated to the memory of the Hillsborough disaster victims.
